Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make your art?

Programmatically, I generally create my work using PHP and CSS. However, a large part of my process involves observing and internalising my surroundings, documenting my experiences through notes/sketches, and letting my mind wander.

In terms of process, there is a log containing all the unique identifiers of printed artwork, this serves as both a negative directory as well as a means for me to keep track of things. Prints sold are unique single editions (only one of each print exists) and cannot be recreated by the code or printed again.

What kind of computer do you use?

Currently, I'm using a dual-boot Hackintosh (a custom Mac). It's an Intel i5, with 16GB of RAM, and an overclocked Nvidia GTX1060 6GB. All this is built into a Small Form Factor (SFF) case and I run macOS High Sierra to make full use of compatible Nvidia drivers (the Nvidia graphics drivers for Mojave are not ideal at the moment).

Why are your prints so cheap/expensive?

I believe in fair and transparent pricing. A large part of the cost goes into the production of the print. I specify high quality paper from sustainable sources and non-toxic ink to a preferred print partner. While the computer is an enabler, many hours have gone into refining the code and curating the selection of pieces. Many more hours have also been spent to finesse the pipeline and refine the printing process.

Also, I set aside a percentage of the proceeds from all my artwork sales and buy treats for my adopted shelter dog, Ah Fong.

Can I learn to do this too?

Of course. But I think firstly, you're going to need some patience. I usually recommend people look at Matt Pearson's book about generative art in Processing and Casey Reas FORM+CODE.

There's also a book by Joshua Davis called flash to the core which kinda helped shape the way I see art and code. While the book covers a fair bit of Actionscript and Flash-based art, there were great takeaways when it came to the approach to dynamic abstract aesthetics. It's a really hard book to find now (seeing how Flash is essentially dead). My original copy was stolen but I have recently managed to find a battered copy on Ebay. Will be happy to loan it to you if you're interested.

At the moment my current preferred medium/language is PHP and CSS because of its simplicity, limitations, and quirks. I also like the fact that I can create and export directly from any web browser.

Do you teach this stuff?

Not this stuff per se. But I do teach web design at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art and always try to introduce the facet of creative coding to draw pictures with numbers. I have also given guest lectures at Orita Sinclair School of Music & Design and conducted user experience workshops for The Design Society in Singapore.

What is your background?

I have a background in painting and fine art, and hold a Bachelor of Digital Media from the College of Fine Art (COFA). By profession, I am a Web Designer/Developer. If you'd like to know more, you can read more about that stuff here.

Can I commission your work?

Certainly. I am open to commissions and will be glad to create work that is meaningful to both of us. Drop me an email and I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
